Life Update

February 3, 2019 By nicole

Hello, unfortunately due to taking a heavy course load at college, I do not have much free time to create art or update this blog regularly. Also, it seems that WordPress has updated and a few of my hyperlinks got a bit messed up, so at some point I will have to go in and modify several posts.

The Winter 2018 issue of The College Artist was released, but due to my busy schedule I felt a bit rushed with the whole project, and it did not come out looking as polished as I would have liked. The Spring 2019 issue is still set to come out on March 1st.

The College Artist Fall 2018

The College Artist Fall 2018 issue is out now!

The College Artist #3

By Nicole Gormley

My Thoughts on This Issue:

The Cover: I think that as a whole the contents of this issue are definitely a big step up in quality from the first two, but I’m not sure how I feel about the cover. I created the contents of the magazine this time around before I thought of the cover, and it left me trying to come up with a cover that matched the contents. Most of the pages had to do with school, Halloween, or coffee-related art. I think that the cover does a good job including all of those ideas, but something just seems off about it. I don’t know if it’s the quality of the drawing of the cups or the color palette or what, but something makes it seem dull or unappealing to me. It is what it is I guess.

The Inside: As I previously stated, I think that the inside contents of this issue definitely look better in quality than the past two:

Overall I think that there has been an improvement in aesthetic and page design. I don’t think it quite looks professional yet, but I’m going to try to make each issue better than the one before it. This issue was shorter than I would have liked it to be. It was only 28 pages. For comparison, the Spring 2018 issue was 36 pages. I spent a lot more time than I anticipated playing around with design elements, and I ended up just running out of time to add more content. I’m going to try to make sure that I give myself enough time for the Winter 2018 issue to have at least 32 pages.

Updates

July 31, 2018 By nicole

All of my friends know that I’m the type of person who always needs to be working on something. Sometimes I continue with that thing for a while, but other times I lose interest almost immediately. Here is an update on the things that I have mentioned on this blog before:

The College Artist Magazine

I’ve started working on the Fall 2018 issue, and it is all set to come out on September 1st! I’ll post a more detailed update about what you can expect in the fall issue closer to the release date.

My Youtube Channel

A few months ago I tried experimenting with different types of videos other than the outfit videos that I had been doing for a while. I plan on continuing to practice my video editing skills when I get a chance, but it isn’t my main priority right now.

Comic

Back in April, I made a post about two super heroines that I had created. I mentioned in that post that I was thinking about creating a mini comic about those characters. I kept thinking about those characters, then I created a few more, thought of a whole story, and I even started to draw an entire comic based off of that story. I really loved the ideas that I had come up with, but I just couldn’t manage to draw any of the panels how I wanted them to look, so I eventually lost motivation. I still love my ideas though, so maybe I’ll go back to it one day. Here are a couple of drawings that I created before I gave up on the project:

Physical Art

I’ve still been doodling here and there, but I haven’t found the time to work on any big paintings or any other kind of physical art lately.

Redbubble

I haven’t added anything to my Redbubble recently, but I’ve still been making a few dollars every month, which is awesome.

Between work, and trying to be social this summer, I haven’t found much time to just sit down and create anything. Then in the fall I’ll have school and marching band to worry about, but I’m sure that I’ll find time sooner or later to start a new thing or maybe even continue one of the older ones that I mentioned here.

Summer Internship Flyers

July 23, 2018 By nicole

Although I haven’t found much time to create any traditional art this summer, I have been able to create several flyers for my summer job:

Into the Digital Age?

June 7, 2018 By nicole

I’ve recently been taking some of my traditional pieces of art and trying to enhance them with digital editing. This includes a computer application that lets me draw on top of images of the original art digitally, and I’ve also been using photo filters to fix aspects such as brightness and color. I’m not sure how I feel about it so far. It is still completely my art since I’m the one who is editing the images, but it just feels like I’m cheating somehow. I love many digital artists though, such as Adamtots and Marsoid, and I don’t feel like they are ‘cheating’. I’m not sure why it feels different for me. I’ve done a good amount of digital art in the past so this isn’t new. Maybe it’s because these images only exist online and the actual physical art still looks unfinished.
